Infographic: Continued

The visualisation of facts and information was going to be distributed across the whole of the infographic to make it all eye-catching. My research of earth focused on facts which were directly associated with the Earth, looking towards the direction of the human facts and how we have had an influence on the Earth. This led me to create the visual of the spaceship which is drifting through space. I wanted to incorporate the information within these shapes as to interestingly display the facts, and how I have composed them I feel that it works very well. The fact within the ‘space trail’ is easily readable, and by using the same type of visual on the other side of the infographic it continues the design throughout and I think it represents them well.

For the spaceship I have chosen a simplistic outline of white so that it matches the rest of the design and creates an interesting aesthetic. I love the outcome of this because it doesn’t draw away from any of the components on the infographic, yet it works as an individual piece too. I positioned it towards the moon to reflect the moon landing facts that are also underneath the moon. I am happy with the overall layout of it so far because of the readability of all of the elements, plus it is suitable for the target audience of 11-21.

Here I have developed it further to combine even more facts into the visuals. In the bottom left hand corner I wanted to display a fact similar to the population one that is in the top right hand corner in order to create an element of reflectivity. I think this works because of the boldness of the trees which, similarly, there are seven to both work together. The vector based designs which are made out of bold shapes continues through to the element facts which make up the Earth. I tried displaying these with only a grey background on the circles, though this didn’t work. Therefore, I used the two colours of the Earth to reflect the circularness of the facts and this also makes them more vibrant and engaging, which I feel work for the infographic. By having these distributed across the whole composition it creatively displays the information, essentially working to compellingly grab the audience’s attention.

Once I had done my research into the interesting facts which were suitable for the infographic I began to make the imagery for it. I discovered that there were quite a lot to do with the moon too as I was researching, hence why I have added it into the infographic. I think that this works really well with the second earth because the variation of sizes of the planets juxtapose each other and therefore create a mini perspective in conjunction with the background. I have used the same greys in which I have used on the desktop and smartphone website to continue the continuity between designs, and I also feel that this works really well because of the iconic-ness surrounding the moon.

After finishing the layers on the earth and arranging them so that they were as accurately sized as possible, I added the labels onto them. This was in the same type face of the Earth typography because it is suitable and also the sans-serif is easier to read rather than a serif. I organised them into their layers with them all arranged on a slight slant, but so that it was still readable, to make the infographic look less like a grid layout, which I think is suitable, once again, for my target audience of 11-21 year olds.

In addition to the previous elements that I have gradually been creating I have also looked into similar layouts and how to display the information. The imagery, I feel, is the most important element in the infographic therefore I want it to look visually interesting and make the audiences eyes jump around the image to discover interesting facts about the planet.

Due to this, I began to draw on the lines between the moon and the Earth, as well as the size guide below the moon to show distinction between the objects as well as displaying the information creatively. I used a smaller type face on this, though sticking with the sans-serif, as I didn’t feel the information was as important as the other facts that I am going to display. Furthermore, this smaller typography works well because it further develops the perspective and it divides up the infographic so that everything isn’t the same size to make it more visually interesting. The usage of black against white was a purposely chosen colour scheme because of the readability that it presents, along with the link to the space background. I love how everything so far has it’s own place and I feel like the infographic is beginning to come together.

The development above denotes my addition of some of the imagery that I have began to create. The astronaut figure was hard to create and it took a bit of time to get it right so that he stood out from the background and actually looked like a human figure. I used the same colour scheme within his suit as to continue the aesthetic of the overall design. I am happy with the outcome of this along with the figures in the top right hand corner as I feel they work with the design and the boldness of the silhouettes stand out against the dark background.

Beside the centred Earth I have made a sequence of lines that wrap around in a circle- coming from the direction of the Earth. I have done this as I want it to be almost like a trail from a rocket. Inside the circle, as you can see, I will display facts about the space missions that have been sent from earth, keeping to the short and memorable facts to engage the audience and to keep the infographic as little text heavy as possible. Overall, I am happy on reflection on how the infographic is coming along and I think that it could be my favourite piece of the package so far because of the several components which work harmoniously together.

Infographic: The start

Infographic1

For the infographic I knew that I wanted to focus on one particular planet so that I could research more into a specific area. I chose Earth because of the vibrancy which I could use to contrast against all of the other elements in the infographic, but as well as knowing most about this planet. I continued to research for facts and interesting information about the planet as I was developing the infographic so that I could get as much done as possible. I continued with the same design from the website as I think the bold vector based imagery works extremely well and it will also make the infographic bold and recognisable, continually making it easily readable when it comes to the type.

Infographic2

As I wasn’t 100% certain on the information that was going to be displayed I began to develop the website using my prior knowledge of the planet. I didn’t want there to singularly be facts floating around the centred Earth as this wouldn’t work for my target audience and it wouldn’t look aesthetically pleasing. Therefore, I came up with the idea of dismantling the earth down to it’s layers as this would be informational and suitable for my audience. I placed this in the corner as I felt that this worked better than shifting the centred Earth as that connotes the subject matter of the infographic and it is also the first thing that your attention is drawn too. Moreover, the second Earth will have several shades of blue to represent the layers within the planet so that it would continue with the theme of simplicity and work in harmony with the rest of the visuals. Continually, I feel that the starry background portrays the direction of perspective that I am going for, along with giving it a bit of texture and depth which is better than having a flat background.

For the aesthetic of my infographic I wanted to keep in theme with the other graphics which I have designed on my website and smartphone application. The vibrant colours and defined shapes worked extremely well on this format so I have continued this by researching into similar ones. All of the infographics which I have researched into all have a simplistic colour scheme which distribute the facts and divide them so that it makes it look interesting and not overpowering. The elements that I like the most are the visuals which are relevant in order to convey the information creatively. The usage of graphs or bold characters is used cleverly to portray all of the information which I will take into my designs by combining the use of text.

I have decided to choose one particular planet to focus on so that it is more specific and I can stay to a simplistic colour scheme that emphasises the design more. I will try not to make it not too text heavy as I have found that this is distracting and the information can be displayed more easily by these simplistic visuals and vectors.
