Jessica Hische

For my branding idea I think that I am going to focus on typography as the basis of the first design. I think this is leaning towards the traditional branding idea for tattoo parlours, but I think that with the foundation of the typography it will create a nice starting point to, therefore, develop from.

This led me to researching into hand-drawn typographers and I came across Jessica Hische. Her typography is done with a specific space in mind and then using it to manipulate the typography. She uses quite a lot of the ‘curvy’ aesthetic in her type, as this is still easily readable and it suits her target market. One element that I like about her designs are the vibrance of colours within them. They work extremely well for the branding on some of the books, and I think that if this was used in a style of a logo or more of a corporate design it would be eye catching and could help the tattoo parlour become more of a nationwide brand across the country.

From both of these designers and typographers that I have researched so far I have gained some initial ideas that I think I can pursue into experimenting, with some ideas having a hand-drawn nature to them as well as the professional codes of digital and a concise layout that fits into a logo design.

Inspiration: Richard Perez

Richard Perez is an illustrator who uses the bold, almost-childish designs which are simplistic and bold in his work. His designs are eye-catching with the style and take on design, which I like. The bold shapes and lines that he uses could work for the simplistic look that I want to go for, as I think that minimalism would be appropriate for the target audience as they are going to be younger so, therefore, this will appeal more to them.

I also like the way he creates the shapes with bold lines and contrast. The amount of colours he uses in his illustrations aren’t something that I will use as I think that there are too many for a branding design, though some of his more simpler designs that use three or two colours work extremely well when it comes to the boldness of them. I think that, as I am going for the tattoo company brief, these drawings could create a nice aesthetic on the letterheads or website. However, I imagine a tattoo parlour (stereotypically) more rough and vintage, and not following the typical directions of corporate design. Therefore, by looking at Richard Perez I have gathered a few ideas on how to create the designs and one approach I could take, though I will alter it further to be more appealing to my target market.

One element, however, that I am inspired by and I like the aesthetic of is the geometric type. I think that this is bold and visual, which could be suitable for a tattoo brand. Nonetheless, when I think about tattoos I think of hand-drawn and unique, with an element of human-produced to it and less digital; moreover, I think that this approach could work better to develop it into a digital design that is professional for the brand. I have gained a lot of inspiration from Richard Perez, despite his style being extremely different to the one that I think I will experiment with in the weeks to come.

Branding and Identity: The Start

For the start of this third project we were given the choice of six companies that we could possibly create a branding package for. These were all very different and as it is the beginning I wanted to choose one where I could experiment in the project and try something new. The two main branding identities that I was thinking about doing was ‘High Seas Ink’ and ‘Le Barbe Magnifique.’

I think these two are more of the aesthetic that I normally go for, plus I have a few original concepts for both of them that I think I could explore further for this project. Although despite this, I would like to push myself so that I can develop my skills physically and digitally. Therefore, for this brief I am going to be using the ‘High Seas Ink’ company as I would like to hand draw some of these and create more vector-based imagery for the logo to make it more professional.

The next stage that I am going to do is audience research and existing brands of a similar identity so that I can create a realistic branding that suits this brief. I will also try to discover new artists and inspirations so that I can go for the corporate approach as well as doing a experimental design on the side to see which works best and which is most suitable. I think this would also give me a choice between them, as the different approach could end up working better than the more traditional one.
